Claire and Patty are standing in what will be the new Family Promise Day Center (below) at North Kent Connect.
Why are we so excited? Because it fills a need for people in this community who have been living in their cars, staying with friends or family, and are constantly working hard to find permanent housing.
Family Promise engages churches and community organizations to provide emergency shelter and basic needs to homeless families and children from northern Kent County seeking permanent housing.
What happens at the day center?
- In the morning, families use the day center as a “home base.” They can get ready for work, shower, do laundry, prepare lunch, look for employment, search for housing, and work with a Family Promise case manager to find permanent housing.
- In the evening, host congregations give families a private room, usually a Sunday school classroom, at their churches every night. Volunteers from support and host congregations bring meals and evening activities for the children. This builds both relationships and a sense of community.
