To Our Heroes“I’m ready. I’m leaving.” Her voice is trembling, but her resolve is firm. Eleven years. Eleven years of abuse, ridicule, manipulation, and chronic financial instability because of her spouse’s addiction. Eleven years, three children, and hundreds of unkept promises later, she is ready to make one of the bravest decisions of her life.

Through our remote advocacy service, our client, “Alyssa,” begins to meet regularly with an advocate from the YWCA. She realizes she is not alone. She is not crazy. She is not to blame.

Christmas Morning ChildrenAlyssa finds an affordable place to live and carefully plans her escape. We are able to assist with rent, and help her develop a budget. The move goes safely, but for a couple days we don’t hear anything. Then she calls. Alyssa has been in the hospital, health complications from years of abuse. She says she is home now. Doing better. Feeling stronger day by day. For the first time in 11 years, Alyssa says she actually wants to leave the hospital to go home.

We offer many services: a Pantry with fresh, healthy foods, empowerment programs, tax preparation, case management, educational classes, utility assistance, a farm stand with locally grown produce; but at the heart of all we do, we seek to provide dignity and respect, love and grace. We identify options, because our clients are the experts of their own lives. We walk alongside them as they journey through the wilderness, doing our best to equip and empower… because all of us, at some point in time in our lives, have needed a little help along the way.

What we do isn’t charity. It’s welcoming our neighbors, listening to their needs, and refusing to turn away.

Fred Rogers once said: “We live in a world in which we need to share responsibility. It’s easy to say, ‘It’s not my child, not my community, not my world, not my problem.’ Then there are those who see the need and respond. I consider those people my heroes.”

To all of you, we want to say: You are our heroes. We can only do what we do because of you: because of the trust you place in us, the support you show us, the partnerships we share, the prayers you offer, the hours you volunteer, and most of all, for being people who are willing to say, “These are our children, this is our community, this is our world – let’s face these problems together.”

God bless you for being those who see the need and respond.

With sincere gratitude,
